Day 9 (#1): AMA Waterways’ Jordan Land Trip, Cairo and Nile Cruise on AMALilia

Day’s Itinerary: The Valley of the Kings, including special access to the tombs of Seti l and King Tutankhamun, Luxor
~ 37°C/100°F

By Paul Bryers

Lovely start to the day with hot air balloons rising over the mighty Nile and the early morning fishermen.

At 8 am we headed off to find drama and love in the Valley of the Kings with Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker….

The Valley of the Kings is a royal burial ground on the West Bank of the Nile River famous for the rock-cut tombs of pharaohs and powerful nobles from the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1070 BC).

The necropolis’s location was chosen because of its association with the setting sun and the concept of rebirth in the afterlife.

We visited the tombs of:

Rameses IX:

This seemed to be a small tomb as we quickly came to burial chamber which was inconveniently closed.

Nothing more to add

Sety I:

The tomb of Sety/Seti I is the tomb of PharaohSeti I of the 19th Dynasty. It is one of the most decorated tombs in the valley, and is one of the largest and deepest tombs in the Valley of the Kings. In a word? Magnificent!

Rameses III

This tomb contains scenes from various religious books, including the Book of Gates (not Bill) and the Book of the Dead.

Tutankhamen….enough said….

Rameses IV’s tomb is located low in the main valley, between tombs KV 7 & 1. It has been open since antiquity and contains a large amount of graffiti.

Hatshepsut Temple

Hatshepsut (c.1473–1458 BC), the queen who became pharaoh, built a magnificent temple at Deir al-Bahari, on the west back of Luxor. It lies directly across the Nile from Karnak Temple, the main sanctuary of the god Amun.

The temple consists of three levels each of which has a colonnade at its far end. On the uppermost level, an open courtyard lies just beyond the portico. Mummiform statues of Hatshepsut as Osiris, the god of the dead, lean against its pillars.

The temple’s walls are covered with beautiful painted reliefs depicting temple rituals, religious festivals, and even the transportation of obelisks from the quarry to their destination in Karnak Temple.

Coliseum of whoever..

We are happy to be experiencing falling snow at last! Our present location is Harstad, where we are engaged in an excursion to explore the nearby churches, early settlements, and Russian Prisoner Camps that were once under German control.

After Harstad, we headed out on a coach to Refenes for car ferry to Flesnes and then on to Sortland to pick up our ship.
A good tour.

A captivating video I recorded from our tour bus on a bridge shows our ship Richard With sailing to meet us.

Navigating South along the stunning Tengelfjord towards Raftsund to join our Sea Eagle boat safari.

The Sea Eagle boat safari was outstanding, with the captain estimating upwards of 60 White-tailed Eagles surrounding our boat during the 2-hour excursion.

The sail into small Trollfjord was wonderful.

Having reached Kirkenes early yesterday morning, we reversed course and headed south towards Bergen in the early afternoon. We will now revisit the same ports but at different times of day. Currently, we are in Hammerfest town, the most Northerly town in the World. The main attraction, in my opinion, is the Coastguard Helicopter training exercise being conducted in conjunction with the Coastguard Ship Kv Bison.

Bad weather makes for some good omnipresent photos.

Kirkenes Snow Hotel. Not sure I see the point….

I had a go at Dog sleighing. The dogs, including puppies, were lovely and very lively and boisterous. They loved me…

A short but pleasant sleigh ride around the frozen fjord; the fjord ice was just beginning to melt.

Cloud cover descended to the mountains like waves from the Nordic Gods, accompanied by wind speeds of around 40 km/hr and gusts of 55 km/hr, with swells measuring approximately 3 meters. What fun!

We navigated through the Magerøy Sound near Honningsvåg and are currently docked at the latter town. Regrettably, due to snow-blocked roads and strong winds, a visit to Nordkapp is not feasible.

The arrival of interesting weather patterns is welcome by me but less so by some other guests. Bless them.

These conditions are currently tapering off. Yawn…

As the journey progresses, it is becoming increasingly challenging to keep track of the days and our destinations – a testament to the sheer volume of Hurtigruten experiences!

We had a picturesque sail before and after Finnsnes.

Morning photograph taken around the Vangsvika area.

…before we arrived in Tromso.

I tried my hand, or should I say, feet at cross-country skiing. Spectacular Fail despite being a reasonable downhill skier….aw well … and as for the sore thighs the next morning…

Better on a mountain bike…that I can handle, mebbies…

Nice view while attempting to ski…

Subsequently, the sail to Skjervoy was nothing short of spectacular! Can I say sore thighs?

Last night, we made stops in Rørvik and Brønnøsund, Sandnessjøen and Nessa in the early hours. At approximately 07.40, we crossed the Arctic Circle, marked by a small globe. The weather was overcast, but presented a lovely landscape of cloud-topped mountains.

Following our passage across the Arctic Circle at 7.40 am this morning, we visited Ornes, a location of exceptional beauty.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions this morning, we performed the ice sacrifice to the Sea God, which proved worthwhile as the sun emerged and clear blue skies appeared.

Evening photographs taken around the Lofoten area.
